Ditch Perfection and Join me in Excellence!

By TeeJay Dowe

I see so many people beating themselves up, putting themselves down and making themselves feel bad because they are trying to be perfect. They constantly bash their own confidence, belittle their worth and lower their own self-esteem all in the name of perfection.

Hello! - As far as the human being is concerned - perfect is not possible! And thank goodness for that, as otherwise we would all be finished, complete, nothing left to learn, nothing left to create, nothing left to explore, nothing left to aim for. That would be a depressing and scary thought and yet so many people claim to want perfection! How many times do you hear the phrase “I’m a perfectionist” or “I won’t be happy till it’s perfect”?

I love that we are not perfect. Not being perfect it’s what makes us individual, special, HUMAN! It’s what makes life interesting, challenging, varied, and exciting. It’s the very thing that makes you You!

It’s time now to stop beating yourself up for something that is not even possible to achieve and instead it’s now time to celebrate being human and embrace all that that means. Set your own standards, discover or re-discover your emotions and be the most Amazing person you can be. No more beatings, just lessons that lead to Blessings.

Being perfect won’t make you more loveable – you are that already

Being perfect won’t make you worthy – you are that right now.

Being perfect won’t make you better – you are already magnificent!

The only thing you need to do is to be the best human being you can possibly be.

Perfection and Perfectionists

Perfection then must be the quality or state of being perfect or complete, so that nothing is lacking, everything is exact, precise and without blemish. It is complete in every way.

Goodness! I feel stressed and overwhelmed just thinking about the prospect of attempting to achieve all that! And yet, isn’t that what we do to ourselves everyday as we attempt the impossible goal of perfect? We even give ourselves the title “Perfectionist” and say it with pride “I’m a Perfectionist” to make ourselves feel better before we beat ourselves up again!

Are you wearing this label too?

As I started to explore what perfection is and what it means I discovered that perfection and being a perfectionist mean different things to different people. This somewhat amused me to think that even the definition of perfection is not perfect and then I thought  “so how are we going to achieve it when we’re not even really sure what it is and it means different things to different people?!”

Join me in ditching perfection and replacing it with Excellence

As there are so many interpretations of the word perfectionist I can’t help but wonder if, because at some level we know we cannot attain perfect,  we have softened the meaning, blurred the edges a little, put in a few compromises and in so doing confuse it now with excellence. For me personally, I’m very happy to aim for excellence in whatever I do because I know that this is attainable and it doesn’t have to be perfect to be excellent. It takes away the pressure of impossibility and replaces it with the excitement of having something I can celebrate when I get there! I like that. It feels so much better.

I'd love to share further thoughts, exercises and experiences re: Perfection and it's traps - let me know if that would be of value to you :-)

Stay Amazing!

Sound advice TeeJay

Hello TeeJay,

I feel the vibe. I will aim for excellence too and be more than happy to ditch perfection.

Perfection, as you said, is intrinsically unattainable by the very nature that we are humans.

Perfection is also unattainable because it is subjective. What is perfection to you might be obsessive behaviour to me and vice versa.

Striving for excellence is tantamount to saying, I like to be the best I can be.

That is refreshing.
