Have to do's....or...Get to do's??????

By Tracey Dowe

Today I had the pleasure of speaking at a manager's development day for Hampshire County Council and was able to sit on on the other guest presentations and workshops which was great learning and networking.

The final presentation was Time Management and Stress Management

Now - even by the admission of the presenter himself....it wasn't the best session ever....what was great though was that it reminded me of a couple of things I'd love to share.

Time management traditionally becomes about to lists and prioritisation ABC style. Whilst it's quite satisfying to tick the things off your list...sometimes, if you're anything like I was....well, I'm adding more things to the bottom of the to do's than I am ticking off the top so they became never ending - not the greatest success strategy if you're a completer!

Then I discovered than time management was not about Have to do's....but Get to do's!

These are the things that today I'm really blessed that I get to do because they are important the achievment of my most important goals. Hmmm.......creates a bit of a different feeling inside when you look at them that way!

Oh - that's assuming that you know what you're goals are of course! It sounds basic but you'd be amazed at how many people do not have goals....not even day to day ones....other than to survive the day!! Not exactly motivating me to get out of bed that one!! If you don't know your goal how will you achieve it and how will you know when you've achieved it????

Something to think about :-)

Rather than writing to lists try setting goals for the month/week/day and ask yourself WHY do you want this? What will it mean to you to achieve it? What will it give you? How will it make a difference to you and those around you? What is it costing you not to achieve it? How does it make you feel not to achieve it?

Then you'll have the motivation to make it happen and - by asking a simple little question each morning you can focus on taking small steps to achieve bigger goals.

Oh -the question???

What one small step can I take today that will move me toward my goal?
