Knowing Too Much

By Kevin Frost
I'm sure many pharmacists find themselves in the position of trying to decode what relatives believe other healthcare providers told them back from the vernacular into the technical and then explaining no-that's-not-quite-what-he-meant-to-say.

It's often a temptation in such times to get involved, to help matters along; although I'm sure it would be the last thing that the doctors, nurses and pharmacist (and many other professionals as well) need.

It can also be a curse to know too much about what's going on with a serious ill relative and knowing that there's nothing more that can be done but wait. Waiting and remembering the number of people that have passed me by in the past and will pass me in the future on their final journey on the way of all flesh.

A severe illness in a family member does remind one of depth of the duty we hold to our patients, even if it does make covering intensive care units and elderly wards difficult for the next few weeks.
