Recreational drugs

By Sara Valente

A night of hyper-activity, intense clarity and absolute pleasure seems like a surreal and addictive experience which is why so many young people are turning to recreational drugs. I have been following the news and reading about the increased number of ‘legal high’ users in the UK and to be honest with you, I just don’t understand it!

Since it seems far too risky to take illegal drugs and instead of using cheap poor-quality cocaine, the next best thing is a so-called ‘legal’ drug that offers an even better high. Why do people turn to these drugs? It appears to be used a lot by young people who like to go clubbing. They may start using drugs because of peer pressure or because of the fact that drugs are a substitute for alcohol which leaves you with a nasty hangover the next day.

Well, why not? If you can go clubbing twelve hours straight loving every minute of the music with limitless energy and have the time of your life just by taking drugs it seems like a great way to enjoy nightlife, right? The way I see it, if you need mood enhancers to have a good night then something about your social life is in serious jeopardy! Your friends must be incredibly boring and the clubs must be so sticky and sweaty that drugs are the only means of escape! What’s even worse is that people don’t even know where their drugs are coming from or what they’re made with. These drugs are not made professionally with controlled amounts of substances and they can leave you with serious side-effects.

We can only hope that a swift ban can put the lid once and for all on these dangerous drugs.
