Simple is as simple does

By Darrin Baines

Recent environmental concerns have convinced us that the world is a system. When we burn fossil fuels, the emissions affect the climate. When we tip rubbish in land-fills, future generations are left with toxic waste. In other words, individual actions sum to greater consequences.

Over the last decade, I have been fascinated by pharmacy policy. Modern day pharmacists are reincarnations of their collective past and archetypes for the future. To use a hackneyed phrase, the profession is “at a crossroads”.

The use of such metaphors gives us an interesting place to start. As a point of discussion, I would like to propose that pharmacy policy is too simple. Given the richness of its history, its opportunities, the profession deserves more sophisticated ways forward.

Over the comings months, I will attempt to re-look at government policy, and suggest new ways forward, using systems thinking.
