The 40th Anniversary of The Glastonbury Festival

By Jim Hutchins
19 May 2010

With the 40th anniversaries of both Jimi Hendrix’s death, and the original Glastonbury Festival in the news, I loved finding the YouTube video where Julian Temple finally and magically places Jimi Hendrix on the Pyramid Stage in front of a 2010 Glasto audience.

The Pyramid Stage

From an original Pilton Festival in 1970, with an attendance of 1500 and tickets costing £1 (with free milk), has grown the Glastonbury Festival of 2010, with 180,000 tickets sold at £190 each. Milk is still available!

This year, there appear to be 17 main stages but many other smaller venues are scattered throughout the festival. The last BBC estimate for the number of stages at a Glastonbury Festival were 44!  It doesn’t matter what your musical tastes are, you will experience it here. You may also find yourself trying new music and and new experiences. That’s the nature of this festival.

We go there to practice our pharmacy skills in this amazing and unique environment.

Myself with James at Glastonbury 2008

Having worked in Festival Pharmacy at the medical centre and Arena Pharmacy in the festival marketplace for many years, I am looking forward to working again with James Powell in Medicine Man Pharmacy in the marketplace this year.

It sounds like both Phil Allen at the FMS Pharmacy and James Powell have pretty much assembled this years pharmacy teams and are continuing with their preparations. The FMS Pharmacy, a dispensing pharmacy, is likely to be open 24 hours a day from Wednesday, through the weekend until sometime on Monday, with a team of over 24 staff to cover the shifts. Medicine Man Pharmacy will be open in the market area from first thing in the morning until late every night, throughout the festival and is likely to field a team of about 12 this year. The Medicine Man Pharmacy will be providing a range of pharmacy services but concentrates mainly on counter sales for self medication. As well as a full range of medicines, James will have lots of other sundries available that you’d find in any normal high street pharmacy.

My own preparations are on track.

We have permission to take the children out of school.

I might need my wellies!

This weeks job has been to sort out parking for the festival. With an extended family heading for the family camping area this year, we want to minimise the distances we have to walk with all our camping equipment. Some of the parking areas are miles from the entrance gates. However, with some family members working for FMS, some for Medicine Man, and some ‘civilians’, it seems likely that we may be allocated parking in several different areas. It’s all coming together though.

Today I did something very important. I’ve looked out my wellington boots!

Ah well. Still 36 days to go. Plenty of time!
