Tony sends his love!

By Jim Hutchins

Before I forget. Tony sends his love to all the old team and wishes he could be here.

Milk

Fresh milk for sale in the camping areas.

Tony Guest ran the pharmacy team at Glastonbury Festival from 1998 to 2008 and instilled in us the whole idea of totally professional pharmacy AND lots of festival fun! We miss you too Tony!

My day started with a wash and shave at the open air sinks. There was a queue but it didn’t matter because it’s amazing how fast one washes in icy cold water! The sun was already getting hot and I felt great as I headed down into the market to touch base with James Powell at the pharmacy. He was working with todays team, Rob & James, whom I would be working with later in the day. I headed back up to the tent for a cooked breakfast with the family. Although the food outlets are superb, many people still do campsite cooking for the flavour and to save money. Most bring the food with them but supplies of eggs and milk are available. In fact, because it’s on a dairy farm, milk is sold around the camping areas from the back of a trailer.

police horses

The children meet police horses Cultin & Clifford.

I finally got to wander today with the children. The highlight was the visit to the Kids Field where they investigated the Fairytale Castle and slide, took in a couple of rides, both had their faces painted free, and dipped into a couple of shows. Glastonbury is a great, and safe place for children and families have always been part of it. The biggest worry is to lose a child but, although very many do get lost, they have always been successfully reunited. Although there are police at the festival, the visible ones are on horseback. My children met two beautifully trained police horses. The horses, Cultin and Clifford, are part of a team of eight police horses who will work shifts, like the rest of the workers, during the festival.

face painting

The free face was a great success.

I started work at 3pm and had one of my busiest shifts in the last eleven years. The continued sunshine and the resulting dust led to huge runs on sun lotion, antihistamines and both cromoglycate and chloramphenicol eyedrops. As I hand over to Sunil and Manisha for their 10pm to 1am shift, it is a relief to know that James Powell is on his way to us with a huge stock refill for tomorrow. I can’t believe how many friends, new and old I met up with today. There was a constant supply of grinning faces from the beginning until the end. I love Glasto.

Although the 2010 Glastonbury Festival doesn’t officially start until tomorrow, everyone is here and the party has already started.

Right. Day off tomorrow. It might be a late night!

Jim. :-)
