Standing at the bus stop at night waiting to catch the last bus home, some youths came over to forcibly obtain a blackberry phone and wallet, they plunged a sharp knife into my younger brothers arm and stomach, the youths ran away with his phone and wallet, he was rushed to the hospital by the helicopter ambulance, he lost more than a pint of blood before he got to the hospital. The police called us to the hospital, whilst waiting in the intensive care unit, two body bags in trolleys were rolled past us, I was nervous, scared and confused thinking.that my brother was dead, then the doctor came over and told us that my brother was undergoing an emergency operation in the theater and that if the air ambulance brought my brother into the hospital two minutes late, he would not have survived, I was so happy he was alive, one would not have anticipated that knife crime being discussed on television could affect a close relative.
After the operation, my brother was given parental nutrition, antibiotics, and patient controlled analgesia as he kept on complaining about the pain in his stomach, but he's now recovering and has been moved to the ward from the intensive care unit.
The surgeons, pharmacists and hospital staff were supportive and caring, they made me very proud to be part of the healthcare profession. I don't know how long he will take to recover but hopefully all should be well in the next couple of weeks. Finally, I wish to thank the air ambulance staff and the accident and emergency staff at King's College Hospital.
