Whoever thought there would be so much detail required for a single prescription check?
Having nearly completed my first year of University with only 12 tutorials on Pharmacy Practice, I was surprised to learn just how much work goes into a single item prescription. My practical exam was yesterday and I had 1 hour to complete 4 prescriptions. Each script being a different presenting different interventions and errors. The exam went well, I hope.
I only just finished on time, how on Earth willl I get on working as a Pharmacist doing 4 multi-item scripts in 5 minutes?
One of my scripts included a Controlled Drug Schedule 2, with more legislation and requirements. Its really fascinating studying the different classifications and laws attached to each Schedule. So many questions on my mind during the exam. Four scripts and about four hundred questions going through my head. Do I put this in the POM register? The CD reg? Have I included the cautionary advisory notes on the label? What counselling shall I give? Do I have the correct dose, strength, form and amount in words and figures? Can a Dentist prescribe this? If thats not enough for us - the Latin abbreviations!
The different prescribers and different prescriptions, the endless drugs available with different dosages and accompanying patient counselling. Pharmacists really are true "experts" in Medicine and I will be proud to call myself a Pharmacist in the Future.
Good Luck to all the Students currently revising!!
Checking prescriptions
Hey Kristy,
Do you by any chance study at Manchester University? I had to do the exact same for my social pharmacy practical last year (I'm second year at Manchester at the moment). The same thing went through my head whilst we practised checking the prescriptions during the practical classes throughout the semester. It's amazing what responsibility a pharmacist has, really.
