You and I should be proud of our profession

I believe the profession of Pharmacy in the UK had one of its finest hours when it voted to welcome pharmaceutical scientists into our fold (1). I think you and I should be proud. It says something about our character which will hold us in great stead as we face the challenges of the future. In spite of the real challenges we still face about our future, we still manage to say: We are a profession of aspiration. I posted my thoughts on how what we did might be contributing to a wider societal debate about aspiration here.

A profession that understands its important role and place in the wider society is a powerful one. A profession that climbs the societal ladder of success but does not seek to kick that ladder off for aspiring professionals because it has the sole interests of its patients at heart, is a credible profession. We can be proud for one day and for one event. Mountains are tackled, one step at a time.

The theme of this year’s RPS conference is: “value of collaboration and teamwork, both within pharmacy and across the wider healthcare profession” (2). I wish everyone attending, a great conference.
