Local authority Glasgow City Council comprises 79 elected members, representing 21 multi-member wards of 3 or 4 members. The council is currently Labour controlled. According to Audit Scotland, the council has continued to make good progress with its best value improvement action plan and can demonstrate some positive outcomes for the people of Glasgow.

MPs Seven — all Labour. Anas Sarwar (Glasgow Central), Ann McKechin (Glasgow North), Willie Bain, (Glasgow North East), John Robertson (Glasgow North West), Tom Harris (Glasgow South), Ian Davidson (Glasgow South West) and Margaret Curran (Glasgow East).

Health service The Greater Glasgow and Clyde NHS Board has its headquarters at Gartnavel Royal Hospital, where the trust is on track to achieve its HEAT (Health Improvement, Efficiency, Access and Treatment) targets and the Cabinet Secretary for Health and Wellbeing has publicly noted that the board had met its waiting time targets particularly in relation to Accident and Emergency, according to Audit Scotland. The board has a particularly positive attitude to smoking cessation, alcohol misuse and treatment of obesity.

Pharmacy School The University of Strathclyde has its Institute of Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences in Glasgow.

Pharmacy contractor committee The Greater Glasgow and Clyde Pharmacy Contractor Committees represents 311 pharmacies.

Royal Pharmaceutical Society branch The Society’s Glasgow and West of Scotland branch includes 1,299 members, 22 fellows, 18 preregistration trainees and 138 registered technicians.

Open space Glasgow is the largest city in Scotland and is situated on the River Clyde in the country’s west central lowlands. The city has an important industrial past but is now a major business centre with excellent shopping and entertainment. The city has 90 parks such as Kelvingrove, Tollcross, Victoria and Rouken Glen and its proximity to the Southern Highlands and the Trossachs makes it ideal for activities such as walking and sailing. Glasgow is due to host the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Schools There are 166 primary schools in the city. St Timothy’s Primary School and Nursery Class in Carntyne is “outstanding”. There are 37 secondary schools in the city Cleveden Secondary School is very highly regarded and St Andrew’s Secondary achieved five “excellent”s in its HMIe report. There are also many excellent private schools such as the Glasgow Steiner School and Kelvinside Academy.

Commuter links Trains to London Euston from Glasgow Queen St (between 4 hrs 10 min and 5 hrs 30 min); Edinburgh (50 min). Motorway links: M8 to Edinburgh (42 miles); M74/M6 to Midlands and the south.
