Price concessions
The Department of Health and the National Assembly for Wales have agreed to grant price concessions for May 2013 prescriptions: temazepam tablets 10mg and 20mg, now £26.50 and £23, respectively, and trazodone capsules 100mg and 50mg, now £31.50 and £25.16, respectively, and trazodone tablets 150mg, now £17.92.

Price concessions
The Department of Health and the National Assembly for Wales have granted price concessions for May 2013 prescriptions for: hydralazine tablets 56 x 50mg, £15.60; indapamide tablets 28 x 2.5mg, £3.40; isosorbide mononitrate tablets 56 x 10mg, £13.10; isosorbide mononitrate tablets 56 x 20mg, £13.88; isosorbide mononitrate tablets 56 x 40mg, £20.55; nabumetone tablets 56 x 500mg, £6.18; naftidrofuryl capsules 84 x 100mg, £7.50; sertraline tablets 28 x 50mg, £12; sertraline tablets 28 x 100mg, £14. There is considerable stock available at or below the concessionary prices, and contractors need to challenge suppliers who continue to charge above these prices, the Pharmaceutical Services Negotiating Committee says.

Price concessions
The Department of Health and the National Assembly for Wales have granted price concessions for April 2013 prescriptions for isosorbide mononitrate tablets, 20mg x 56, now £13.88 and 40mg x 56, now £20.55 and not as printed in the April edition of the Drug Tariff. In addition, the Pharmaceutical Services Negotiating Committee has been informed that licensed stock for isosorbide mononitrate tablets 20mg and 40mg has been released into the market as of 26 April 2013.

Phenytoin capsules error
The Pharmaceutical Services Negotiating Committee has highlighted the incorrect list price of phenytoin capsules at AAH wholesalers for the months of November, December and January. The listed prices are considerably higher than those in the Drug Tariff. The Drug Tariff Part VIIIA reimbursement price for November, December and January for phenytoin sodium capsules 25mg x 28 is £15.74, for phenytoin sodium capsules 50mg x 28 is £15.98, for phenytoin sodium capsules 100mg x 84 it is £67.50 and for phenytoin sodium capsules 300mg x 28 it is £67.50. The PSNC advises all contractors who have purchased phenytoin capsules from AAH to check their November, December and January invoices and contact their local depot to arrange a credit note for any stock purchased at the incorrect price.

The Department of Health and National Assembly for Wales have agreed that Rosemont Pharmaceuticals’s licensed product, paracetamol oral suspension 500mg/ml sugar free, will be removed from Part VIIIB and listed as a Part VIIIA Category C line. This will be reflected in the December 2012 Drug Tariff and reimbursement for prescriptions submitted in December will be based on the Part VIIIA price.

Drug Tariff simplification
Guidance on forthcoming changes to the Drug Tariff has been published by the Department of Health. The changes will be in two phases — in April and July 2012. The first will include changes to payments for droppers and applicators, and reimbursements for diluents that are not prescribed. The second phase will include changes to payments for methadone oral liquid, broken bulk and out-of-pocket expenses. Further details from the NHS Business Services Authority website.

From 1 April 2012, Sterets pre-injection swab, blackcurrant glycerin swabsticks and lemon glycerin swabsticks will move from being listed in the Drug Tariff as medicinal products to medical devices, and thus will no longer be reimbursed on NHS prescriptions.

Imported products
Updated wording for Part VIIIB of the drug tariff, relating to imported unlicensed products, now states that contractors should make every reasonable effort to obtain a certificate of analysis or certificate of conformity for each imported product source. Where the COA or COC is unavailable the contractor must stamp, date, initial and endorse the invoice with the invoice price less discount, and the prescriber’s details. Each month the contractor should send a copy of the appropriately endorsed COA, COC or invoice to the primary care trust of the prescriber.
Midazolam
Midazolam oral solution 10mg/ml prescriptions will now be reimbursed as multiples of the 5ml basic price listed in Part VIIIB of the drug tariff. Contractors must clearly endorse where they have supplied containers with an integral means of administration.
