Medicines counters & pharmacist

Medicines counters should have a pharmacist in charge

From Mr A. G. Hopkins, MRPharmS

An experience of mine a few years ago emphasised to me that the medicines counter is the first place the general public meets pharmacy.

In the particular incident in which I was involved, part of the medicines counter was in the sole charge of a young woman. The customer before me was irritated by her lack of knowledge about paracetamol.

In my own case, she was out of her depth because I needed ranitidine.

She did her best, making enquiries to some hidden person who did not come forward to the counter.

The image of pharmacy has far from improved in my mind. Medicines counters should have a pharmacist in charge, otherwise we cannot claim to be the experts we think we are.
