University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust is recognised as one of the leading NHS Foundation Trusts in the UK. With 6,700 staff caring for half a million patients a year and a £545 million state of the art new “super hospital” due to open in 2010, there’s never been a more exciting time to join this Trust.

The Pharmacy Department at UHBFT is one of the largest and most progressive in the country. Within the new hospital we envisage our pharmacy team fully integrated into clinical teams at ward level. Alongside this we will be looking to innovative solutions for medicines supply and are actively engaging with commercial partners to ensure that our patients get the very best from their medicines and the pharmacy service.

Our state of the art £5.5m Manufacturing Unit is a designated lead unit for the NHS in England as set out by the Department of Health. As such we are committed to the national strategy to modernise manufacturing within the NHS, including working with commercial partners to ensure that patients have access to essential high quality medicines. Plans are underway to expand the service further to include:
• dose banded chemotherapy
• parenteral nutrition
• high risk injections (including epidurals) in response to NPSA guidance
• homecare products including antibiotics

Technical services also incorporate radiopharmacy and our licensed chemotherapy lab based on the Queen Elizabeth Hospital site. Plans are underway to build an additional and specific gene therapy pharmacy within the Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Facility; this alongside the recent announcement of the new Birmingham Clinical Research Academy will place UHB at the forefront of clinical research and patient care.

Following a successful recruitment campaign we have recently appointed a new Associate Director - Technical Services and a new Director of Regional Pharmaceutical Quality Assurance for the West Midlands. This is therefore an exciting time for the right applicants to join the team.
