Amy Stanforth has been awarded Numark’s preregistration student of the year at a gala dinner at The Belfry, West Midlands. Ms Stanforth, from C. A. Brack Pharmacy in Stamford Bridge, Yorkshire, was also awarded £500 prize money, sponsored by Reckitt Benckiser.
As part of Numark’s year-long programme, preregistration students were asked to run a health promotion event based on topics they covered throughout a series of workshops. Preregistration students were judged on the quality of the health promotion event that was staged along with feedback from tutors and workshop facilitators on their performance throughout the year.
Ms Stanforth’s project was called “Stamford Bridge Stomp”, which is part of the UK Walking Health Initiative and involves leading a half-hour health walk at lunchtime every Tuesday. She said: “The programme has created invaluable networking opportunities for me. I have had the opportunity to chat face-to-face with representatives from the wider world of pharmacy. I have also learnt about [a] loan guarantee scheme, which has made my long-term ambition to buy my own pharmacy seem more feasible.”
Karina Adams, training associate at Numark, who presented the award to Ms Stanforth with Trevor Gore of Reckitt Benckiser, commented: “Amy had a simple idea, but it brought the community together, driving footfall into the pharmacy and bringing the message of healthy living to the community.” Ms Adams added that Ms Stanforth designed the flyers, became a “walk leader”, set up a web page, got publicity in local publications and risk-assessed the walks.
A further two preregistration students were highly commended. They were Samantha Thompson from D. H. & G. Treharne Ltd in Boroughbridge, York, and Moses Nutekpor from Chrischem Ltd, Mile End, London.
